Hello Everyone!
Come join us on Thursday, April 6th for a delicious Altura Bistro lunch and a presentation on the Iditarod Air Force by Monte Mabry!
From an article on the history of the early Iditarod Air Force on the iditarod.com website:
"With no road access available past the Anchorage ceremonial start and restart areas of the race, supplies such as straw and dog-food drops need to be flown in to the checkpoints that span from Knik to Nome. Using just about any aircraft available, these planes haul thousands of pounds of race-related items into checkpoints and villages. Aircraft such as the Cessna 170, 180, 185, 206, and 207s along with Piper Super Cubs, Pacers, Cherokee Six, Maule, Stinson 108s, and Aeronica Sedan on skis and wheels have made up the fleet that eventually became the Iditarod Air Force. As Dick Mackey said, “Really anyone who had a plane and wanted to volunteer was welcome.”
We look forward to seeing you at Altura!

Aloha Rotarians and Rotary Friends!
Come join Anchorage South Rotary for our Island themed Parcel Post Party!
Wear your Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, and other fun island inspired attire, and get ready for the Luau. ASR is providing main dishes from Hula Hands; we encourage you to bring a side dish for the potluck style meal, and please bring your own beverages.
The party starts at 5pm on Saturday, April 15th with a social and dinner from 5-6, and continues with a live auction at 6!
Thanks to our gracious hosts, District Governor Mike Ferris and his wife Shannon, for hosting this event at their lovely house.
5235 Shorecrest Dr.
Anchorage, AK 99502
This event is our primary fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation for the year: we all bring a wrapped gift valued at $100 dollars or more from somewhere in the world we've been on our travels, wrap it, and label it saying where in the world it came from. At 6, our very own President, Dan Newman, will go through and auction off all donated items. There will also be some dessert items available in a silent auction.
Every Rotarian who contributes a minimum of $100 to the Foundation's Annual Fund before 4/30/2023 will receive a 400 points match. That means you'll be 50% of the way there for your first or next Paul Harris Award!
We can't wait to see you there! |

Apr. 20, 2023 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Come join Anchorage South Rotary for an amazing Alutra Bistro lunch, and a presentation by Dave Stieren from the office of the Governor!
The special burger is special in a number of ways this week... it is a celebration of chef Nathan Bentley's father miraculously regaining enough health to get back into his cancer treatment journey!
From Chef Nathan:
We witnessed a miracle today. My Dad had been removed from treatment last week as he was having very severe side effects and scans were showing that the treatment was not working. Pushing forward there was too much risk of doing more harm. As a family we began to prepare for the heartbreaking end of his cancer journey.
Then, over the last few days we began to witness the surface lymphoma masses begin to disappear. We were told it’s very rare for patients to have a turn around like this. Tomorrow, Dad will be placed back onto the EPCO treatment. His journey continues. Everyone please join in with purchasing a “#BentleyStrong”burger this week to cheer him on! $10 per burger will be donated to his charity of choice, the Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission! WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH, DAD!!
This burger is a 5oz filet-mignon bacon patty, 48 hour sous vide beef cheeks, roasted oyster mushrooms, tomato, shaved onion, gruyere cheese, gremolata mayo on a house challah bun!

Hi Anchorage South Rotarians and Friends!
We are super psyched to invite you, dressed in your 80s best, to join us for a rad time as we thank outgoing President Dan Newman (and his righteous board!) for his time, effort and dedication to Anchorage South Rotary over his year as President! This epic event will be catered by Sal's New York Grill & Catering!
It's that time...we must provide a headcount to the caterer a week in advance (by June 15th), so if you haven't already signed up during a previous lunch meeting, please RSVP now by texting or calling Jenny Carty at 907.250.0503 to RSVP or with any questions you may have.
The price is $40.00 per person. Please pay with cash, check or credit card at tomorrow's meeting or bring your payment to the Changing of the Guard. (NOTE: If paying by credit card, Janine would prefer you pay her directly at the meeting, as opposed to online.)

Hi Rotarians and Friends!
Come join us at noon on Thursday, August 17 at Altura Bistro for an amazing lunch and a presentation by author Dr. Bill Cox!
We are excited to have Dr. Cox present this week; he's writes about his many journeys and adventures in his book "My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil", published in November last year.
From the author's website:
Bill Cox’s favorite directions are west, north, and uphill. He grew up in New Jersey, transited to Michigan for undergrad, medical school, and residency before heading to Alaska in 1984. While backpacking through Europe in 1972, a seed for adventure was planted after Bill took off uphill in the Swiss Alps and met Hans, an old man who spent his summers high up in the Alps, in the shadow of the Jungfrau, where he made cheese. Bill says, “I walked into a fairy tale.” That seed found fertile ground and sprouted in the Last Frontier known as Alaska—and even more so in the vast continent of Asia beckoning from just across the Pacific. Adventure called with 26 trips overseas which found him wandering across Siberia, Mongolia, India, and the smaller countries of Southeast Asia. From a sit-down meeting with the Dalai Lama in India to drinking gin with a member of the criminal mafia in the Russian Far East to coffee with a homeless street friend at an Anchorage, Alaska McDonalds, My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil will excite, educate, and exhilarate. The special sandwich this week is a filet mingon-bacon patty, house made stracciatella cheese, mama lil's peppers, basil, garlic aioli on a house made challah bun.
Please have your orders placed by 10:00 on Thursday, the google sheet can be found here LUNCH ORDER SIGN-UP LIST.
